Valle Aurelia Guideby Vatican Apartment Suite Roma

Valle Aurelia, Rome: the neighbourhood next to the Vatican

In shortValle Aurelia is a residential valley just west of the Vatican walls, in Rome's Municipio XIII. Its station is served by both Metro A and the FL3 regional train; the Vatican Museums are one metro stop away (Cipro). It is quieter and more residential than Prati or Borgo, with green space on Monte Ciocci and free on-street parking in many streets.

Where it is and how it connects

  • Valle Aurelia station: Metro A (one stop to Cipro for the Vatican Museums, two to Ottaviano for St Peter's, no changes to Spagna and Termini) and FL3 regional train (Roma San Pietro, Trastevere, Ostiense in one direction; Gemelli and the north-west in the other).
  • Two streets with almost the same name: Viale di Valle Aurelia and Via di Valle Aurelia are different streets. Check which one your accommodation is on before you call a taxi.
  • Aura shopping centre: supermarket and everyday shops next to the station.

Green space and views

Above the station rises Monte Ciocci, a hill park with a well-known view of St Peter's dome, crossed by a walking and cycling path. To the north the Pineto regional park offers a larger area of Mediterranean woodland. Both are good for a morning run or an evening walk away from the crowds around the Vatican.

A bit of history

The valley was long an industrial area of brick kilns, whose clay and bricks were used in Rome's building sites for centuries; the smoke of the kilns gave the area the old nickname "Valle dell'Inferno", the Valley of Hell. The surviving kiln chimney is one of the few reminders of that past in a neighbourhood that is today mainly residential.

Arriving from the airports

  • Fiumicino: Leonardo Express to Termini, then Metro A direction Battistini to Valle Aurelia without changes. Alternative: FL1 to Roma Trastevere or Ostiense and change to FL3 for Valle Aurelia.
  • Ciampino: bus to Anagnina, the terminus of Metro A, then Metro A direction Battistini straight to Valle Aurelia.
  • Taxi: Rome's fixed airport fares apply to destinations inside the Aurelian Walls; Valle Aurelia is outside them, so agree the fare with the driver before departure.
